Sun Bingo is an online bingo site from the publishers of the famous UK tabloid newspaper The Sun. When you consider that The Sun has been offering its readers a wide variety of bingo game cards for decades, a move into the online world is not much of a surprise. What is surprising is just how genuinely innovative the The Sun Bingo experience is. In a nutshell, we love this place, and although we have a couple of minor gripes that we’ll mention as we get into the review proper, in many respects it’s one of the best online bingo sites currently out there.

Sun Bingo requires no download as all the action takes place in the web browser. Signing up for a new account is a simple matter of entering your name, address and other basic details but – and here’s our first gripe – there is no facility to try the game for free. This means that you have to enter your payment details and deposit the minimum sum of £10 before you can even look at the game. Fortunately, the game is well worth playing for real right from the off, but it would have been nice to have had a free play option nonetheless.

There are five bingo rooms at Sun Bingo. You can choose from traditional 90 ball bingo, 75 ball pattern bingo, 80 ball bingo, Cinco and Hamster Race. The latter two games aren’t technically bingo, so we won’t discuss those except to say that they are both enjoyable and well presented, but the 80 ball game is worth a mention because it isn’t very common. It’s basically a bingo game that uses 80 numbers and a bingo board of four rows by four columns. Prizes are paid to the first player to make a horizontal line and then to the first player to make a full house. The 90 ball and 75 ball games have the same rules that you would find anywhere else.

Sun Bingo has several “chat games” to enjoy. One of these is if the number “88" is called during a game, then the first player to type “2 fat ladies” wins. If it is not called, then it will roll over to the next bingo session. Another includes “Blankety Blank.” where the chat host will type in a title or statement but will leave a blank space and the chatters must try to guess the word.

There are other classic games such as “Trivia,” “Name that Tune,” “Movie Quotes,” and “Anagram”. The chat rooms themselves have very bright and colourful designs. All of the games here at Sun Bingo are extremely impressive from both a visual and audio point of view. Graphics are colourful and sharp, and there is some clever use of animation to keep things interesting. For example, when your tickets are daubed in 90 ball bingo, you don’t just see the card being marked, but you actually see a virtual dauber marking it.

Another example of clever animation is the way the 80 ball game boards are tilted at the end of each game so that they are reset in preparation for the next one. Layout and organisation of the gaming screen is also very good, with large bingo tickets or boards, a generously sized chat facility and clear information sections.
